How The Wellness Journal is funded
The Wellness Journal is a reader-supported publication. We do not sell advertising space, we do not accept sponsored posts, and we do not run display advertising on our articles. We fund this work through affiliate relationships with a small number of product companies whose products we genuinely recommend.
An affiliate relationship means that if you click a link on our site to a recommended product and then purchase that product, we may receive a commission from the manufacturer or retailer. This commission is paid by the company, not by you — the price you pay is the same whether you use our link or not.
Current affiliate relationships
At the time of this update, we have affiliate relationships with the following companies:
BioDynamix — maker of Joint Genesis, a joint health supplement discussed in our article "Why the First Ten Steps Hurt Most." We earn a commission on sales made through our referral links.
This list will be updated as relationships are added or ended.
How we decide what to recommend
We follow these rules, without exception:
We only recommend products we would personally use or have used. Every affiliate product on this site is something Susan Hartley has personally tried or would be willing to try given what she knows.
Affiliate relationships are never allowed to change editorial conclusions. If a company offers us an affiliate partnership and we don't think their product is worth recommending, we decline. This has happened multiple times.
We do not accept products in exchange for reviews. We buy products with our own money whenever possible. When a company offers to send us a sample, we generally decline and purchase ourselves.
We do not accept payment for coverage. Several companies have offered us flat fees, bonuses, or "promotional budgets" to write about their products. We have declined all such offers.
We disclose affiliate relationships clearly. Every article that contains affiliate links says so at the top. Our affiliate disclosure appears in the site banner on every page.
What this means practically
When you read a recommendation on this site, you can assume:
We might earn a commission if you buy the product through our link. The product is something we would recommend even if we didn't earn a commission. We are aware that the existence of a commission looks bad and makes you reasonably suspicious. We're disclosing it anyway because that's what honest writing requires.
If you are uncomfortable buying through our affiliate link, you can search for the product directly and purchase without using our link. We'd still rather you read honest writing than not read it.
FTC compliance
This disclosure is provided in accordance with U.S. Federal Trade Commission guidelines on endorsements and testimonials (16 CFR Part 255). Material connections between this publication and any product or service mentioned herein are disclosed in this policy and in the relevant articles.
